The Beach That Sings: This Hidden Gem In Manchester Has Musical Sand!

If you’ve never visited the Singing Beach in Manchester, Massachusetts, you’ll want to check it out ASAP. Known as Manchester-by-the-Sea, this beach has sand that “sings!”

While small compared to other beaches (only about a half-mile wide), the unique properties of the sand make this beach quite memorable. The sand must be dry to “sing,” so you’ll likely hear it farther from the water.

Although no one is 100 percent certain how the sand “sings,” some plausible explanations exist. The sound might result from nearly round grains of quartz sand that are much the same size rubbing together. As you walk over the sand, vibrations from your movements cause the grains of sand to glide over one another.

This isn’t the only beach with seemingly magical properties.

Thanks to an underwater volcano, a beach in Okinawa, Japan has become something of a real-life optical illusion.

When the pumice rocks that were expelled from the eruption made their way to shore, it caused the surrounding water to look like an extension of the beach. It looks pretty normal at first, but watch what happens when this man throws a rock at the “ground”:
