Have You Ever Seen A Butterfly “Waterfall?” Entomologist’s Footage Captures The Breathtaking Sight & Sound

Monarch butterflies are incredible creatures. Each winter, many of them migrate from colder spots in North America all the way down to sunny Mexico City. In doing so, they have a much better shot at surviving. This takes place every year, and yet, we will never get over the beautiful sights and sounds that accompany their big move. You have likely seen at least a video or two of their migration process, but there’s a good chance that none were quite like this one.

Phil Torres is an entomologist. In other words, he is an expert on insects. So, when given the opportunity to observe monarch butterflies up close, you know he had to take it. In doing so, he was able to capture what he calls a butterfly “waterfall.” Experience this magical moment for yourself in the video below.

Why do they do this?

When monarchs migrate, they do so in large numbers — millions, to be a bit more exact. You might think that would make their 3,000-mile journey chaotic, but it goes far more smoothly than you might think.

Part of their travel plans include only traveling in the day. Then, when the night comes, they gather close together to stay warm. This results in the “waterfall” position as seen in the videos above and below. Who knew such quiet creatures could produce such incredible sound?

In recent years, the monarch population has been on a decline. That makes videos like this one all the more special. Plus, they’re a reminder of the importance of helping to take care of our animal friends!
